Where fellowship, food, fitness & fun fuse to make fellow seniors become life-long friends.
While the fellowship is one of the greatest features, the fitness, presentations, fun with arts & crafts, cards and dominoes are main attractions. There are also monthly field trips and Friday dances that always pull a crowd. A few seniors even have a fancy for swimming that keeps them fit.
In short, the program offers a wide range of fun activities geared towards seniors befriending one another and living life to the fullest. The program meets from 9 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday.
Recently, the program had a Grand Opening that didn’t signify the start of a program, but… The start of “Grander” program that adds 4 additional aspects of the program that is allowing our seniors to spread their wings and fly with various community works.
- Senior Secretarial School – They will be taught basic secretarial skills of running an office and doing light filing.
- After School Facilitators – We will be starting an After School program in March and will allow the retired teachers to assist from 3pm – 6pm.
- Gardening – Our Saturday program called The STEM Foundation will be building a >>Solar Panel Community Garden in the community.<< It will be a educational destination and the seniors can assist as tour guides or caretakers of certain plots in the garden.
- Lunch Prep – The seniors will assist the University of Houston program called The Point in feeding about 200 college students on 1 Wednesday a month.
The “Grander” program extends South Union Community Development’s partnership with the Houston Food Bank. The organization provides the meals for the program (they also provide the Saturday hot lunches for The STEM Foundation Program).
